Slate Floor

My husband and I would like to install Slate tile in our Kitchen. We have done extensive research and have visited 5-6 show rooms. It seems that wherever we go the same named slate looks radically different. We're interested in Guaged slate that has beige or gold tones but does not have the grey/white mixed in. Black or Green tones within the beige or gold are also fine. The California Gold is too dark. We though Indian Autumn might be what we were looking for, but again we keep finding such a wide variation. Do you have any suggestion short of opening each box we purchase to find out whether or not we're in the ball park? We would expect 10-15% of the tiles to not work, but the variation we have seen from store to store in the same color has us worried.
