south bay quartzite

I am working on a home whose  exterior is composed of south bay quartzite.  The stone was quarried from the lower champlain area.  Rust stains have been developing in various plaves and bleeding down walls..  In some places it is becoming a real eyesore.  Is there a recommended course of action to both remove the stains and help protect against future staining.  thanks in advance.
