old slate floor that has been laid on a dirt base

I have an old slate floor that has been laid on a dirt base, and have been advised that the slate needs to breath and cannot be sealed with a commercial sealer. 

I have been advised to use a combination of linseed oil and turps do you know of the correct mix?  Or do you have any other suggestions of what to do?
