staining granite

I have the opposite of most of the questions you are asked: is there any way of deliberately staining or coloring a small section of granite? Our Juparna Bordeaux countertop has a greyish streak about six inches long by an inch wide. It's slightly pitted and looks like a "defect" in the stone. We asked the installer to see if he could polish it out, but he said that it might chip or come loose if he did so. If it were darker, it wouldn't bother us, but it stands out against the otherwise black and red surface. Is there anything we can do to disguise it without damaging the stone?
