Alternatives to marble?

Hi - I am building a new kitchen and have a 1920s home. I love the look of marble and limestone for countertops but have read about your strong opposition to these materials being used for kitchen countertops. What would you suggest as a good alternative in terms of achieving a similar look but more durable? thank you - katie.
