slate for kitchen countertops???

Hello

I found your site on line trying to figure out if slate is a good idea for a kitchen countertop.

 

I am remodeling my kitchen and have a limited budget but will live in the house for the next 20 years. Its a small kitchen and I'm looking for something that is low maintenance, durable and timeless.

 

Can you tell me what is the best bet?
